Webster’s defines success as “favorable result, the gaining of wealth and fame.” I agree to a point, but the definition doesn’t stop there. Success is being content and happy in all areas of your life. A person can be rich and powerful in business but not have a happy home life. Someone else could be a master craftsman and be able to create beautiful furniture from wood, but not financially secure. Is one person more successful than the other?
Time being the great equalizer should be valued far greater than money or material possessions. Somewhere between Tim Farris author of “The 4 hour work week” and Gary Vaynerchuk author of “Crush it” is you. Your work ethics and the leverage of time will allow you to be successful. IF… you put your time to good use. Only you know where you hold the value of your time.
“The poor will always trade time for dollars and wonder why there is never enough…The rich will trade dollars for time and live life to the fullest.”
A friend of mine holds his time is extreme high regard. In his business he ONLY puts it where it’s going to give him the most benefit… and he is very picky. His team trainings are almost always in group settings and scheduled when he wants. He would much rather pay others to do menial task that doesn’t want to do. This is the mindset of a successful person, whether or not they are making a lot of money. He will have someone else do his laundry, cleaning, yard work and some cooking, so he can spend most of his time with his family. A few may say that’s a little arrogant or too upper classy… is it? Or is it leveraging dollars for time.
There are two reasons why someone starts a business. It’s to move towards something or away from something. In both cases time and or money are the big factors. So if we value time so greatly why don’t we put it to use where it’s going to serve us the best? Sometimes our greatest legacy is not our stuff… but those growing up right beside us.
Spending time with family is always a hot button for most people. One of the things I like to do is take each of my kids out for a date by themselves. It’s a great way to give some undivided attention they so richly deserve. A few of our adventures have been: bowling, laser quest, mini golf, and the movies. We usually grab some dinner before and maybe a little ice cream at the end.
A few days ago I took the day off and went to the car races with my son and a couple of other guys from our family. We went to the American LaMans finals. Let me tell you, those are some cool, loud cars! Because just the guys are allowed to go and the name of the venue is “LaMans”, the all day event is called “MAN DAY.” I believe my nephew coined the phrase.
We had a blast. This was the first time my son and I have been to one of these races. We both came back home ready to go again. This will certainly be yearly event for the guys. Below are some pictures of the “MAN DAY.”

8 Comments and Pings on Man Day – Father And Son Time
Hey Ken!
WHAT a GREAT post! Thank you for sharing this amazing reminder with us about just how VALUABLE our time is and who we should be sharing it with! Goal-oriented actions are critical in running a successful online business. As much as we love our social media, if you sit on Facebook and Twitter all day without doing anything else, your probably not going to be getting too far.
A mixture of fiercely focused action in our businesses, a little fun in social media, and a ton of fun with our families is a recipe for ultimate success!
Keep sharing your inspirational thoughts!

Amanda,
Thank you for your meaningful comments. Right on the money too! Without a focused social media game plan your just spinning wheels. Unless that’s what you want. Without setting your weekly calendar and prioritizing your time, those precious events with your family will float on by. Work hard and play harder!
Ken
Ken,
Another great post! Balancing family and work is always hard and I try and do it myself and I always make sure that I spend time with my wife and my girls before I get into my work. It’s a good practice to have!

Mike,
Thanks for the comments. Your right.. balancing family and work is hard, but so important. We need to keep the family happy. They are our biggest supporters. I can’t wait for our families to hang out together. I know your doing a great job keeping your family first. I can gear it in your passion and inspiration for others.
I’m grateful for being in your tribe!

Ken,
I truly admire the passion you put into every single area of your life. Not only are you driven to create massive success in business, but you’re equally committed to being an awesome dad (which must be quite a challenge given the size of your family)!
One of the things my family has been able to do consistently is spend quality time around the dinner table almost every night. I love your idea of taking each kid out individually….shows them that each is valued and loved at a special level.
As far as “farming out” the undesirable chores, I couldn’t agree more. Not only does it free up our time for the important things in life but it helps others who’ve chosen to work in these areas. Keeping money flowing is an important contribution to our economy.
Rock on my friend, I’ll meet you at the top

Kathy,
Thanks for the wonderful comments. Yes… with 5 kids one on one time is a bit of a challenge, but we well worth it. Staying organized and planning ahead has been the key. It’s really amazing how each child opens up and communicates when there is no sibling rivalry for time and attention.
I love hearing how families are able to spend time with each other. Having dinner together is an incredible example of your priority to your family. You are truly setting the example for your kids.

I love that book. “The four hour work week.” It’s a good goal. Trying to get there. It’s important to find out what’s important to you, and make that the focus.

I hope I’m allowed to comment in the boys thread! hehe!
Our time is our absolute most valuable asset… and its the one thing we can never get more of. We can recover from every mistake except wasting time. Time with our family is so incredibly dear.
Its easy in business to get caught up in “busy”… which is VERY different than being productive. Busy has no bearing on you being successful… so why be it? Being focused and productive for a few hours a day is WAY better than being busy all the time!
